Restitution in South Africa has largely been associated with the delivery of housing units. This project recognises the importance of establishing a healthy public realm to support a healthy community. This task used an extensive public participation process to build a rationale for a public realm investment strategy that brought together the complex dynamics of heritage and environmental drivers alongside the ambitions of a vocal, and sometimes divided, community. The exercise produced a system of public spaces, design guidelines for streets and public spaces and a matrix of projects that drives an execution plan for the City of Cape Town.
